CHAPTER FIFTEEN

I braced my fists on my hips and glared at the knife stuck in the cabin’s wooden door. “Oh, this is just—”

“Overkill?” Fitch suggested, stepping from his SUV.

“Ridiculous.” Death beside a giant can of peas, a crossbow, a knife in the door. It was too much.

Charlie reached for the knife.

“Don’t touch it,” Fitch and I shouted in unison.

Behind the closed cabin door, Fredo barked once. A high-pitched yap.

The dog. I smacked my forehead. I’d almost forgotten about Fredo. He must be ready for a walk. I opened the door. The tiny dog charged out, snapping and snarling.

“Hey, buddy.” Charlie lifted him up.

Fredo gave him a startled look and fell silent.

Pulling my phone from my pocket, I snapped a picture of the knife in the door. pulled on my gloves again and wrenched the stiletto from the door. It looked a lot like the knife that had been left behind at the murder scene but flimsier and with a bone handle. In fact... I squinted. It wasn’t a knife. It was a letter opener.

“What is it?” My brother set the dog on the porch.

Fredo bounded to me and tugged at my shoestrings, his bulging eyes rolling with the effort.

“Gert again?” Fitch asked.

I frowned. “Maybe.” It seemed odd he’d return so soon. Maybe he’d come back to make sure I was dead, and when I wasn’t, had left the letter opener?

Walking inside the cabin, I switched on the brass hanging lamp. I laid the letter opener on the coffee table.

“Hey, cool,” Charlie said. “Can I keep the stiletto?”

“No,” I said.

Fitch snapped a picture of the blade. “Who knew small towns had so much drama?”

“Everyone who’s ever lived in a small town.”

“But seriously,” Charlie said, “mind if I keep it?”

“It’s evidence.” And removing it from the door had been a rookie mistake, especially after scolding Charlie for picking up the crossbow. I might not be a detective, but I should have known better. I needed to start acting like a PI, even if I didn’t feel like one.

And Gert needed to back off.
